Walter Scott Monument & the walk up the hill
Going by the Walter Scott Monument on my way up the very steep hill, toward Edinburgh Castle. It was also pretty cold and there was a constantly bashing wind.
Edinburgh Castle
After the steep walk through the city, is the even steeper and more wind ripped, spiraling assent within Edinburgh Castle. Starting at the parade ground for the Military Tattoo, our tour guide Davy was great. We went through the gate house flanked by statues of Robert the Bruce and William Wallace, and saw the firing of the 1 O’Clock Gun. We continued the circling rise, leaning into the wind, and passsing the barracks.
At the top is the Royal Palace, on Crown Square, next to the Scottish National War Memorial (no interior photos allowed). The Royal Palace is home to the Honours of Scotland: the Crown, Sceptre and State Sword (no photos allowed), and the portrait-timeline and the royal apartments.
Surrounding Crown Square are ramparts overlooking the city, and the oldest building in the castle, St Margaret’s Chapel.
